Information about the Thyroid Gland
The thyroid is responisble for metabolic rate
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)
  • This is made in the pituitary as part of a feedback system based on thyroid function
  • My normals for this are very narrow
Free T4 (Thyroxine)
  • Contains 4 iodine molecules
  • Relatively inactive
  • Can convert to T3
    • Is impaired by low or high cortisol levels
    • Can be impaired by Hashimoto's hypothyroidism
Free T3 ( Free Triiodothyronine)
  • Contains 3 iodine molecules
  • Active
  • High cortisol can increase binding of T3 making it inactive
  • Low cortisol reduces the availability of free T3
RT3 (Reverse T3)
  • This is an error and is inactive
  • It is created when cortisol levels are too high
  • One of the iodine molecules is misplaced
