The History of HRT
The Rise and Fall of HRT
  • In the 1920's the equine estrogen product Premarin® (which stands for "pregnant mare urine") was developed to keep women "forever young".
  • By the 1950's it was found that unopposed estrogen increases the risk of endometrial cancer in women.
  • Studies also done in the 1950's concerning progesterone showed that it was protective against uterine cancer when taking estrogen.
  • After those studies in the 1950's the synthetic product Prempro® (a combination of Premarin® and Progestin®) was created. It is important to note that Progestin® is not Progesterone, which is a naturally occurring human hormone.
  • In July of 2002 the results of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study showed that Prempro® increased the risks of blood clotting, heart and cancer related health issues.
  • Follow-up studies (WHIM) showed that it was the Progestin® in Prempro® that increased the aforementioned health issues.
  • After the results of the WHI study were made public approximately 50% of women on HRT went off all synthetic hormone products. This is the time when interest in bio-identical hormones peaked - there were a lot of miserable women.
  • AGAIN PLEASE NOTE - PROGESTIN® (A SYNTHETIC PRODUCT) IS NOT PROGESTERONE (A NATURALLY OCCURING HUMAN HORMONE)
  • There are over 400 studies showing the efficacy of naturally occurring estrogens and progesterone.
  • Let's not forget testosterone.
